Who keeps the trains going?

The People Behind the Rail

Here are five key roles that ensure the trains, stations and even ticket sales are executed smoothly.

Station Master
The station master looks after the safety and operation of the station, including overseeing train arrivals and departures, and coordinating maintenance of station facilities and equipment. Strong communication skills are essential, as the station master must relay critical information to ensure smooth and safe train movements.

Locomotive Driver
Tasked with operating the train along designated routes, their responsibilities extend far beyond driving. Before each journey, they conduct safety checks and prepare the train. During operation, they maintain constant communication with control centres, signal operators, and onboard personnel.

Signalman
The signalman plays a key role in ensuring the safe and efficient movement of trains by managing track signals and switches from a signal box. This role is critical in maintaining proper train spacing and routing.

Train Conductor
As a visible and accessible member of the train crew, the train conductor serves as a primary point of contact for passengers. Their duties include verifying tickets, collecting fares, issuing penalties for non-compliance, and overseeing the operation of train systems such as doors and passenger communication.

Track Maintenance
These personnel are responsible for the inspection, upkeep, and repair of railway tracks and related infrastructure. Their work includes identifying defects, servicing switches and crossings, and ensuring the overall integrity of the rail network.
