THE PARK

Bringing Life to Lived Spaces

Like most railway towns, Kluang was one that boomed with the opening of its railway station in the early 1900s. Receiving commuters from far and wide, either searching for opportunity or community — the passing of the trains signalled new beginnings for all. Whether they were merely passing through on their way to stations beyond, stopping by for a cuppa or trading their wares, there was no denying the transformation that followed with each carriage that rolled along the tracks.

Fast forward to a century later, modern technology has transformed various modes of transport, but the railway remains the beating heart of the town. Kluang is now a stop on the Gemas–Johor Bahru Electrified Double Track Project (EDTP) undertaken by SIPP-YTL, the final upgrade in KTMB’s network to an electrified double track stretching from the southern tip of the peninsula to Padang Besar.
In Kluang, the EDTP is brought to life via raised tracks on viaduct columns that allow the trains to pass through the town high above the ground — allowing the surrounding townsfolk to have a glimpse of the train chugging along every few hours as it glides along the steel tracks. This elevation then laid the foundation for a new opportunity — what does one do with all that space underneath the tracks? How do we transform a history-rich area into a space that all can enjoy whilst preserving the heritage right beneath our feet?

Thus, Laman Mahkota Rel was born. Situated on a 2.9km stretch of land where the original railway tracks once laid, the park now hosts a dynamic green community space designed to celebrate history while harmonising heritage with modern urban living.

History in Motion

Take your time to wander through the park and uncover intricately woven historical points in its design — where old railway components are repurposed and seamlessly integrated into the park. From the station’s original signage, old railway track and platform, train shelter, to its iconic pedestrian crossing bridge, all of these structures have been preserved, ensuring the spirit of Kluang’s old railway era remains alive in this modern green space.

Enjoy the journey through time and nature, right here in the heart of Kluang.
